The Terra Ignota Forum (TIF) is a knowledge transfer and training program with the communities of the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica. The project was developed around the discovery of the Intercultural Contact Zone (ICZ) found in 2021 in Yendegaia National Park by the Terra Ignota team. The discovery confirmed the existence of a passage between between the Beagle Channel (Yendegaia bay) and the Admiralty Sound  across the Darwin Range, a point of contact between three ancestral ethnic groups that used to pass through this area: the Selk’nam, Kawésqar and Yagán communities.

Past editions of the Terra Ignota Forum took place in the remote Cordillera Darwin itself, the geographical and culturally inverted agro-industrial region of northern Germany (Rügen), and collaborated with institutional complexities of the Ethnological Museum of Vienna and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santiago (MAC). The new edition of this program is taking place in Valdivia between the 11th and 16th of December at the Centro Cultural La Leñera. In Exhibitions, workshops, talks and discussions, open kitchen, greenhouses, radio broadcasts, readings, weavings, concerts and listening sessions we questioning the entanglements of physical and cultural environments.

Carried out with the support of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation and the Institute of Visual Arts of the UACh, Terra Ignota Forum proposes to conceive spaces as dynamic and adaptable fields with the power to regenerate and reprogram themselves in relation to those who inhabit them, emphazising the importance of exchange and participation in creating and shaping reality.

TERRA IGNOTA Radio Forum

During the month of May, through a series of simultaneous radio meetings in the studios of Radio CASo and Radio UACh, some results of the most recent journey of the project will be presented, which included three days of forums with artists, geologists, philosophers, archaeologists, local entrepreneurs, women of the selk’nam and yagán people, with the purpose of analyzing in an interdisciplinary way the potential of a future museum park located in Tierra del Fuego.

The broadcasts are organized in thematic axes from which a diversity of guests on both sides of the mountain range will seek to explore forms of passage on the line that crosses the island of Tierra del Fuego from north to south, the political border between Chile and Argentina.

2020 – Terra Australis Ignota Research Group @ Ars Electronica

In 2018, Terra Australis Ignota Research Group (TARIG) – Alessandra Burotto (CL), Paula Lopez Wood (CL), Víctor Mazón Gardoqui (ES/DE), Alfredo Prieto (CL), Gerd Sielfeld (CL) and Nicolas Spencer (CL/AT) – traveled to Cape Horn, the southernmost continental island in the world before Antarctica.

Ars Electronica 2020 – In Kepler’s Gardens platform will present a translation of that trip under the title Achæoscillator_Towards incorporeal forms of sensing listening and gaze.

Achæoscillator displays the drastic weather conditions of the southernmost island in the world on a virtualized representation of the end/beginning of the Americas. A one-person experience, where the research presents traces and connections between the ancestors of the Yagán community, the Kawesqar and Selk’nam and the Antarctic, Scotia and South America continental plates, offering an inestimable and uncontrollable source of Gaia’s power.

Next to the Achæoscillator project there will be a film documentation of the trip to Cape Horn, a publication of scientific papers and a round table of the participants.

Terra Australis Ignota Research Group (TARIG) is part of the Terra Ignota platform.
